Cuba's Car Culture: Celebrating the Island's Automotive Love Affair by Tom Cotter; Bill Warner (Photographer); Stirling Moss (Foreword by)

$45.00 AUD

Available Stock:
0

Category: Machinery | Reading Level: General Adult

Cuba's Car Culture drives through Cuba's love of American cars of the '40s and '50s, and the ingenuity that keeps them running despite the U.S. embargo.2017 Silver Medal Winner of the International Automotive Media Competition The story of how Cuba came to be trapped in automotive time is a fascinating one. For decades, the island country had enjoyed healthy tourism trade and American outpost status, and by the 1950s it had the highest per capita automotive purchasing of any Latin American country. But when Cuba fell to communist rebels in 1959, so ended the inflow of new cars. Since then, trade embargo forced Cuba's car enthusiasts to develop a unique and insular culture, one marked by great creativity, such as: -Keeping a car alive with no opportunity to acquire replacement parts -Customizing a car with no access to aftermarket parts -Drag racing with no drag stripIn many ways, Cuba is an automotive time warp, where the newest car is a 1959 Chevy or perhaps one of the Soviet Ladas. Cuba's Car Culture offers an inside look at a unique car culture, populated with cars that have been cut off from the world so long that they've morphed into something else in the spirit of automotive survival.Authors Tom Cotter and Bill Warner (founder of the Amelia Island Concours) take readers on a whirlwind tour of all things automotive, beginning with Cuba's pre-Castro car and racing history, up to today's lost collector cars, street racing, and the challenges of keeping decades-old cars on the road.Cuba's Car Culture is illustrated throughout with rare historical photos as well as contemporary photos of Cuba's current car scene. For anyone who enjoys classic cars, whether they're old Chevy Bel-Airs, Studebakers, or Ford Fairlanes, a cruise around Cuba will make you feel like a kid in a candy store. ...Show more

Legendary Sailboats by Beken of Cowes

$105.00 AUD

Available Stock:
0

Category: Machinery

Through an extraordinary selection from the Beken Marine Photography Archive of the work of four generations of famous photographers (the Beken family), this book retraces the fundamental stages of the evolution of the unsurpassable "Beken style", bringing together some of the most artistic images of sa ilboats ever shot. These wonderful and legendary pictures, accompanied by detailed texts and plentiful information, will lead the reader through time, to discover the wonderful world of yachting photography. The Bekens began their love affair with marine photography in 1888, when Alfred Edward (1855-1915) moved from Canterbury (Kent) to the Isle of Wight with his son Frank (1880-1970). He purchased a pharmacy in Birmingham Road in the seaport of Cowes, a town that was already famous for international yacht racing and for the world's oldest regular regatta, the renowned Cowes Week. Alfred and young Frank started shooting photographs to capture sailing yachts at their best (learning how to achieve the most favourable angle), and racing yachts in action, a real challenge at that time as it still is today. These beautiful photographs started being sold in the pharmacy as souvenirs, and in the space of a few years they would have caught the attention of the world of yacht racing and sailing aficionados, earning the Beken family a large number of followers all over the world for the extraordinary quality of their images. Queen Victoria, King George V, and most recently the Duke of Edinburgh awarded the company a Royal Warrant for excellence. Frank's artistic inheritance was carried on by his son Keith (1914-2007), who succeeded him in the creation of fantastic sailboats photographs. Today, Kenneth Beken (b. 1951, the fourth in the line of family photographers), together with yacht master Peter Mumford, is leading the way in the latest digital photography, and creating wonderful colour images: "Now that digital cameras and printers are as good as the traditional darkroom methods," he says, "the company has gone totally digital." Today the Beken Marine Photography Archive features more than 200,000 different photographs of incalculable value, from historical monochrome masterpieces to contemporary digital images of the highest quality and technical perfection. ...Show more

Six Decades of Holden vs Ford by Dave Morley

$50.00 AUD

The Holden versus Ford debate has been around for as long as the cars themselves. But with the curtain finally falling on local car-making in Australia, the chance to take a sideways look at six decades' worth of competing product from Holden and Ford was just too good an opportunity for motoring journa list Dave Morley to pass up. This book isn't a workshop manual, and it's definitely not a reference source. This is a tongue-in-cheek look back on the cars we drove, and a fond examination of what was so good and evil about them. Along the way, you'll discover stories you haven't heard before, lies debunked and legends cut down to size. Not to mention some genuine what-were-they-thinking moments. ...Show more

Fifty years ago this year mainline steam in Britain ceased to exist, the last official date being August 11, 1968. A special dispensation was given for Britannia Class 4-6-2 number 70013 Oliver Cromwell t o travel under its own steam into preservation on the 12th and 13th of that month, but we now know that those plans never made it to fruition, though eventually steam locomotives would return to the main lines on highly popular Specials. The Ride 2nd Gear - New Custom Motorcycles and Their Builders, The Gentleman's Edition by R Klanten

$110.00 AUD

Available Stock:
0

Category: Machinery

Men and motorcycles: a story that has vacillated somewhere between cult and cliche for years. Custom bikes, in particular, have a history that is deeply rooted in the spirit of freedom and change of the 1960s, as well as man's primal urge to build something with his own hands -or, in this case, tools. T he Ride 2nd Gear is a showcase of the power and beauty of these bikes. The book presents a stunning selection of recent custom motorcycles, as well as the small, local workshops around the globe in which they are built. Hotbeds of creativity and craftsmanship, these workshops are mostly run by single individuals and attract a small yet devoted community of fans and fellow builders. Rather than coveting the newest luxury models to come off the assembly line, this community is more concerned with transformations. They want to turn grandpa's old heap, a bargain found on eBay, or a soulless model from another era into something of their very own. They want to augment old motors and existing mechanics with modern technology or make their personal visions of aesthetics and handling a reality. This process takes time, dedication, technical expertise, and skilled handcraft. From limited series to one-offs made for personal pleasure or to order, The Ride2nd Gear features the brilliant results of this process. Its pages are filled with bikes that offer extraordinary design and driving experiences. In fact, established brands are now acting on trends set by the custom scene whose bikes are often more radical and sophisticated because more attention can be paid to detail and each new idea can be fine-tuned to perfection. The models shown in The Ride 2nd Gear stem from or are based on classic bobbers and choppers, Italian-style racing machines, plastic Japanese motorcycles, and rare BMWs or Triumphs, some of which may very well be 30-50 or even 80 years old. They are vintage in the best sense of the word. They not only preserve, but also improve and expand upon the quality of traditional craftsmanship. Decked out with state-of the-art disk brakes, LED lights, gears, and drive components, these custom machines are more agile, faster, and therefore more fun than anything produced in the past." ...Show more
